Treatment of Poppy's massive eyelid tumour.

Poppy is a 6 year old Irish Draught X mare who presented with a rapidly growing eye lid tumour. A needle biopsy confirmed that it was a sarcoid. As you may already know sarcoids are locally malignant skin tumours, which means that they can grow very aggresivly, and cause major problems at a specific site but do not spread internally to kill the horse.

On the eyelid the only effective treatment is irradiation by insertion of radioactive (iridium) wires. These are inserted under very heavy sedation. The radioactivity burns away the cancer cells and causes massive sloughing. The prognosis is, however, very good. The treatment was performed at Liverpool University and cost the owner over £3000.
